Sourceis a different type of theatre experience. Presented by RADE in collaboration with Cathy Coughlan, this is a show that pervades the most visceral of our emotions, leaving us illuminated and touched.
RADE is an inner city CE Programme which “engages drug users with the arts and therapeutic supports” (press release). Choreographer Cathy Coughlan and the ensemble of performers (consisting of; Joseph Byrne, Karen Conway, Kevin Davidson, Derek Dunleavy, Jody Jones, Glenn Murray, Sarah O’ Reilly, John Ward, John Devoy and Jimmy Wynne) devisedSourcethrough a series of workshops with the focus on personal ambition and dreams.
From the performance’s beginning,Sourcegave the impression of community. Working in the superb, and little known, space of South Studios, the ensemble looked comfortable and at home. These performers are not professional dancers nor trained actors, yet the skill exhibited by each and every one of them in the performance was magical. There was an abundance of commitment from the ensemble, with each performer experiencing a cathartic, personal journey.
The structure of the show depended on a multi-media styling. With both communal and individual performances, the piece channelled its story betweenthe vast onstage space, and the hidden, dream-like space represented by through cinema. Lighting and props were innovatively intertwined with the performance, but for the most part it was stripped back and simple.
The show never pontificates or dwells on the negative, instead in enraptures the audience opening their minds up to a beautiful, yet dark, image of humanity. The group embodies passion, and their stories are emotive and wonderfully imagined.
Sourcewill lift you up, it will make you feel good and it will stay with you long after the curtain drops.
