WHAT’S HOT : 19th March 2012
Catherine Love once again scours the theatrical landscape to bring you our list of show’s that you must see this week – from Shakespeare to Sondheim and from Love to Murder, we have something for all ages and tastes in this weeks mix.
1) SWEENEY TODD – ADELPHI THEATRE, LONDON
A vengeful barber, lashings of blood and putting people into pies – it might not sound like reason for breaking into song, but Stephen Sondheim’s deliciously dark musical concoction manages to be both amusing and sinister in this new revival, which has transferred to the West End from Chichester. Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton pair up to take on the leads of the demon barber of Fleet Street and his adoring landlady Mrs Lovett in Jonathan Kent’s production.
Runs until 22 September
2) ANNE BOLEYN – NEW ALEXANDRA THEATRE, BIRMINGHAM
The most famous – or possibly most infamous – of Henry VIII’s six wives gets her side of the story told in Howard Brenton’s hit play, which is now on tour following two seasons at the Globe. Eschewing stereotypical ideas of the queen as a promiscuous, witch-like figure, Anne Boleyn as presented in this production is a confident woman with a mission to make England a Protestant country, a mission that leads her into dangerous territory.
Runs 20 – 24 March
3) RED LIGHT WINTER – USTINOV STUDIO, THEATRE ROYAL BATH
This award-winning play from American playwright Adam Rapp gets an airing on this side of the pond courtesy of Theatre Royal Bath and director Richard Beecham. The classic love triangle is given a bizarre twist when old friends Matt and Davis try to escape their lives in Amsterdam and are thrown together with prostitute Christina, an encounter that will have huge repercussions for both their lives.
Runs until 31 March
4) FLOYD COLLINS – SOUTHWARK PLAYHOUSE, LONDON
The Southwark Playhouse looks to have struck musical gold once again with this production of Tina Landau and Adam Guettel’s award-winning musical about the eponymous cave explorer, who became the subject of a massive media circus when he was trapped 55 feet below earth in 1925. This revival is directed by Derek Bond and stars Glenn Carter, Robyn North and Ryan Sampson.
Runs until 31 March
5) DNA – ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE, MANCHESTER
This contemporary classic from the pen of Dennis Kelly, now best known for writing the book to the hit musical version of Matilda, looks at the dark side of humanity and the aftermath of a horrific act. A group of teenagers make a terrible mistake and are brought together in the act of covering it up, but as more chances to come clean pass them by they weave an ever more intricate web of lies.
Runs 20 – 24 March
