For a winter treat to get you in the Christmas spirit head to Sherman Cymru for a magical trip you will never forget.
This different trip to Neverland is not quite what you would expect from a performance of Peter Pan. Opposed to starting out with playful youngsters in their large Edwardian House, Wendy’s home is a grotty flat where she and her brothers (played by adults) are getting ready for their first Christmas without their mother who recently passed away.
Wendy takes on her mother role looking after her brothers and telling them stories that were told to them by their mother about a boy named Peter Pan. As she dreams about her stories on Christmas Eve, Wendy is soon startled by Tink who enters the flat through the open window. Closely follows Peter Pan, looking for his missing shadow. Her fears soon disappear and Wendy helps Peter by stapling his shadow back on.
Soon the audience feel like their flying alongside the new friends – with the help of some very clever lighting effects, including strobe which unfortunately is not announced – and arrive in Neverland where they are greeted by the lost boys, Toodle, Curly and Nibbs. Together with Peter they play happy families adopting Wendy as their new mother where the audience experience some of the cast’s marvellous vocal talent.
This may be a present day version but there are still plenty of adventures to be had and all the highs and lows that you would expect from the story. There is even some traditional and well welcomed audience participation.
Rob Evans, who adapted this script of Peter Pan, has given it a modern, and ironically, rather more grown-up twist. With its more adult friendly content this heart-warming production has a guidance of seven years plus and definitely provide fun and laughter for both big and little kids.
Despite its very small cast and with its very clever set, it is safe to say that this is a thoroughly enjoyable re-make of the festive favourite
