Ed Fringe 2010: RayGuns Look Real Enough – Laughing Horse@The Three Sisters

Reviewer Alex Millar

The Public Reviews Rating: ★★★★½

With the free fringe comes an unfair expectation for work to be sub-standard; this offering from RayGuns Look Real Enough is a case in point. I’ve read a rather bile ridden review from a well known newspaper and wondered if they had actually looked up from their Blackberry during the hour of ‘Set to Stun.’ As debut shows go this is gutsy, riotous and fun. Ray Gun and Luke Real (AKA Ryan Beange and Paul Flannery) take the ‘mash-up’ style of interlinking songs and give it a wee twist; ‘stadium rock, on a tiny scale.’

The room is hot and depending on where you’re seated the view’s not great, but when you have such a forceful character as Mr Beange’s front man combined with the slapstick cool of Mr Flannery’s lead guitar it doesn’t bloody matter. The crowd was a little reticent at first but by the middle numbers the singing along started and quickly cascaded in to the above head clapping and voila; stadium rocking. They nip nimbly from 70′s to 80′s hit and before you’ve caught your breath they’ve moved on to 90′s and 00′s slick mixes. Even the sudden intrusion of a country and western staple cannot throw off this juggernaut of well considered frolics.

The boys ooze charm and even if you find yourself saying ‘but all they do is cover other people’s stuff’ then settle your mind and re-engage because it’s the effortless transfer from Britney Spears to The Cure To Yazz and flip reverse to Europe that will have you loving them and every minute of this show. The hour flys to the pyrotechnic finale and then the wonderfully silly stage wrecking begins. I could go on, but I believe I will let the boys speak/sing for themselves; go see them quickly as they’re already graduating to bigger venue’s and just because its free please don’t leave without paying; they’re worth a lot more than nothing.
