Ed Fringe 2010: Charlyne Yi, Dances on the Moon – Assembly @ George Street
Reviewer: John Roberts
The Public Reviews Rating:

I love stand-up comedy, but then again I don’t think I know anybody who doesn’t enjoy a good laugh, I also enjoy having to go away and think through things that I have heard, or to be touched by something quite profound that it can change the way you percept things for years to come. So it was with a huge smile on my face and a warm glow (like a big hug) that I came out of Charlyne Yi’s Edinburgh Fringe debut being able to safely tick all three of the aforementioned things.
Yi is no stranger to comedy – having already made an impact in her homeland of California and having had successful Hollywood Films ‘Knocked Up’ and ‘Paper Heart’ to her name, so it was a little disappointing to see so few people turn out for this beautifully conceived show.
On the outside Yi has the looks of a high school geek, but within her persona lies a shining light which oozes beauty, a smile which is infectious and sense of humour that not only has the pwer to make you laugh uncontrollably but also to make you hideously uncomfortable at the same time.
Dances on the Moon leads us through the ups and downs of Yi’s search for love – but this isn’t your average comedian, for what makes Yi and her routine so irresistible is her ability to blur everything and make you question what is the truth and what is made up, what is her really revealing herself and what is her stand-up persona.
Through many witty songs, well made video clips and well presented comedy you are blissfully whisked away for 55mins – If you are looking for something a little different to your mainstream comedy and something that will make you feel different about how you view comedy in the future then Charlyne Yi: Dances on the Moon should be at the top of your to see list.
Runs until 30th August
