Ed Fringe 2010: Becky & Naomi, Sketchy @ Best – Belushi’s Bar
Writers: Rebecca Windsor & Naomi Cooper-Davis
Director: Antony Law
Reviewer: John Roberts
The Public Reviews Rating:

I must admit, I have tended to stay away from the free fringe and the five pound fringe, generally my experiences of them have been a little underwhelming, but I had received an email a few months ago from Becky & Naomi asking us to review their Edinburgh Fringe debut. Well as they snook in early with their request I found myself sat in the bijou bar of Belushi’s watching some of the best new sketch comedy I have seen this year.
Becky & Naomi may lack the finesse of Idiots of Ants or Pappy’s but they are certainly not short of enthusiasm. Despite it being a small crowd their quirky and well thought-out sketches make even the small audience laugh from start to finish. Opening the show with two lovable rogues Tyrone and MC Biks, Windsor & Cooper-Davis go head to head in a rapping battle to win the attention of one lucky female in the crowd. A brilliant little sketch about box buying and the art of office suicide are also highly enjoyable and leave you at times cringing with disbelieving laughter.
I must admit that despite having a director, it felt that the show was lacking in overall coherency and could have done with stronger direction from Antony Law especially with the thread of World’s Got Talent , which felt a little desperate and lacking in originality…However saying that, It is clear that Windsor and Cooper-Davis have a unique sense of humour which may not tickle everyone’s taste buds, but their intelligent writing style and deadpan delivery make it an engrossing hour of highly watchable comedy.
It is always a delight to see new talent showcasing their work, it is even more exciting watching something take place where you know something big could happen in the next few years…and that is what I predict for Becky & Naomi…get along to Belushi’s now – You won’t be disappointed!
