BOOK REVIEW: How To Produce A West End Show – Julius Green
Author: Julius Green
Publisher: Oberon Books
Reviewer: John Roberts
There has never been a secret formula to producing a hit west end production, if there was we could all become overnight millionaires and live off the fat of the theatrical land for the rest of our lives. However what we do have thanks to theatrical producer Julius Green, is an in depth handbook that will become a bible to those with even a fleeting interest in producing.
What Green doesn’t know in his 25 plus years as a theatre producer isn’t worth knowing and thankfully he shares this wealth of information with us all here. All areas are covered, from the initial production idea, to getting a theatre, to finding that all important capital investment right the way through casting, rehearsal, marketing, P.R, to the inevitable closing of a show.
Green writes with a friendly yet authoritative tone, finding a user friendly balance of information and on the job anecdotes. Green has the ability to come across as a mentor not a preacher, something which many other books within this industry could learn a lot from, however he doesn’t shy away from the dry and rather unwelcoming truth of the profession either.
This book is a must for anyone working in the theatre, not just producing. It gives an invaluable insight into a process we very rarely see and thanks to Julius’ help producing is now a process in which we can have a little more understanding and that can only be a good thing.
